Met-gala has always been the long-awaited fashion event where many celebrities and designers work together to create the magic on the red carpet to come up with great outfits for the special event.

But do we all know why the Met-Gala event is organized? Why so many celebrities take their time to prepare for this event and how the process goes? What is the significance?

The met-gala is the biggest fundraising event hosted by well-known celebrities and Hollywood stars for the annual fundraising gala celebrating the Costume Institute’s magnificent new exhibition on a changing theme. It all started in 1946, and over the decades, it has become a grand affair—the party of the year.

How it all started?

The met-gala didn’t start as an extravagant event we know and love today. Back in 1946 fashion publicist, Elenor lambert introduced the met gala to the new york society. She sold tickets to this intimate gathering for 50$ a piece. The intention was to raise money for the brand new costume institute at the metropolitan museum of art. Now tickets go for about 25 thousand dollars and the tables are snagged by the fashion elite but even money won’t guarantee an invitation to the event.

Met gala over the years:

Over the years when the met gala started in 1946, it didn’t have a theme, the idea of a yearly theme wasn’t introduced until much later.

In 1971, Diana Vreeland signed on as a special consultant after leaving her position as an editor in chief at vogue.

She introduced the first theme The World of Balenciaga in 1973. One year later in 1974 Cher stunned everyone with the first-ever naked dress. designed by Bob Mackie. This look has been reintroduced on many celebs including Beyonce, Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner.

Rihanna’s dress designed by Gua Pei in 2015 took two years to make. The theme was China: Through the Looking Glass. Her gold embellished yellow cape needed an entourage of men to help her carry the stunning train across the red carpet.

In 2018 Ariana grande’s outfit designed by vera wang had everyone talking. She was wearing the images from the Sistine chapel on her flowing for the theme Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

In 2019, in response to the Camp theme Lady Gaga blew everyone’s mind with her red carpet transformation. Designer Brandon Maxwell is responsible for this costume extravaganza as well as Gaga’s past epic met gala looks. The hot pink dress became a black ball gown complete with umbrella, turned hot pink dress with a huge vintage cellphone and campy black sunglasses, turned sparkly black bra tights and platform boots was perhaps the most talked-about display in the history of the met gala.

Rules to follow at the event:

While it seems like anything is possible at the met gala, there are some very strict rules everyone must follow while at the event.

Social media and selfies were banned during 2015 when the notice from the met gala sent out the notice to all attendees. The rule stated that using phones for photographs and social media would not be permitted inside the gala.
You must be 18+ to attend the Met gala.
No smoking or onion breath.
No parsley is allowed for the fear that little green leaf might get stuck in celebrities’ teeth ruining the pictures.
Onion garlic and parsley are strictly banned from the cocktail hour at the beginning of the evening.
No red wine.

The pandemic doesn’t care about fashion, so the biggest fashion event of the year has been postponed and then canceled due to the coronavirus. yet we can say that this new year brings more possibilities and we couldn’t wait to see what the 2021 met gala has to offer.

2021 started with fresh and great aspirations moving on from the horrors of 2020. The world was on pause with a covid pandemic all around. 2020 can also be referred to as the year of maximum digitalization. The world learned to engage itself in art, cooking, developing skills, and media. As a result platforms like Netflix, Disney Hotstar, etc. gained a massive following. One of the Netflix originals: Bridgerton (European drama – history- romance) influenced the trends with its world-renowned audience base. This popular series brought back the fashion of the corset. The corset was one of the most emphasized fragments of the fashion world having a dramatic history with various turns of events.

The corset was first invented in France around the 1500s by Catherine de Medici, although it had its origin as an undergarment in Italy. This corset had an elongated bodice worn as an undergarment with a farthingale that gave out a conical visual. Women were supposed to wear this to the French court believing it as indispensable to the beauty of the female figure. The corset functioned in flattening the bust and in doing so, pushed the breasts up. Around 1800, the corset supported the breasts, as the waistline was raised to under-bust. Supporting the breast was the primary purpose yet they also slimmed the torso. The natural waist was ignored as the corset emphasized more on the high waist.

The waistline returned to its natural position by the 1830s during the Victorian era, corset served the purpose of supporting the breasts and narrowing the waist introducing the hourglass silhouette. During the 19th century, an hourglass figure with a tiny waist inspired tight lacing, and also it was the century of protests. Around the late 19th century many reformists raised a voice against the corset fashion as they exaggerated health risk, claiming that they could remove ribs or rearrange internal organs, compromised fertility, weakness, and general depletion of health.

Edwardian corset known by many names – straight-front corset, the swan-bill corset, the S-bend corset, or the health corset was functioned to force the torso forward and the hips jut out in the back. The corset was invented to be less injurious to the wearer’s health by exerting comparatively less pressure on the stomach area. Fetish fashion became popular during the 1990s and now corsets were worn as outer garments. Corset gained its status as a classic style in the history of fashion never the less it was brought back into the limelight with the help of the entertainment field. The number of social media influencers, lifestyle influencers, fashion leaders, and fashion enthusiasts flooded the media with corset styling making it an irresistible trend.

A corset can be styled as an outer garment with co-ords, formals, boyfriend jeans, A-line skirts, mini & micro skirts. One can always have a fresh fusion look by styling the corset with ethnic wear, maybe by wearing on a kurta set or using it as a blouse on lehengas. A corset can always be styled like was in the Victorian Era, as it’s never old to feel like royalty again. Get the sharp body silhouette – look by styling yourself within a corset.
